Video coming soon: Learning Traditional Medicine at Won Institute
Temples are often sites where members informally exchange information about traditional healers, share herbal remedies, engage in massage, or otherwise participate in facets of traditional Asian medicine. In some cases, Buddhist temples explicitly promote certain practices or traditions. The temple building might include a dedicated space within for treatments, for example, or the resident monk might grow medicinal herbs in a garden on the temple grounds. The Won Buddhist Temple is unique in the Philadelphia area in that it even founded an accredited graduate school with programs in acupuncture and Chinese herbs (among other subjects). On scales both small and large, Buddhist temples are important spaces for the practice of Asian medicine in the US.
